Who are the The More Natural Capital Coalition
- An alliance of environmental charities who are working collaboratively to make policy change in London.
- The alliance is convened and chaired by CPRE London, who are the regional branch of the national environmental charity.
- CPRE focus on protecting London’s green spaces.
What do they want? 10 environmental pledges
- The More Natural Capital Coalition are inviting candidates of the London Borough elections to support their ’10 practical pledges’
- These have been designed to protect nature, improve access to natural environments, and enhance benefits for local communities.
- The goal is that these pledges will help shape our engagement with councillors, electoral candidates and the public in London.
What’s particularly impactful here?
- Whilst all pledges are focused on environmental improvement- I think it’s really important that all of these ‘changes’ are able to be delivered within a single council term. It makes the pledges feel more tangible, and also easier for us to hold the candidate accountable for ticking them all off!
So what are the pledges? Topline summary
- 🌳 Protect all heritage trees.
- 💧 Create at least one new area of wetland in the borough.
- 💧 Install on-street rain gardens & support householders in capturing rainfall.
- 🌳 Turn at least 1 derelict green site into a nature reserve, park or wetland.
- 💷 Proper funding for green & blue spaces, managed to ‘Green Flag’ standards.
- 🍃 Protect local wildlife, green belt & heritage sites within local plans.
- 🌳 Give every community access to nature on their doorstep.
- 🥕 Support the ‘Right to Grow’ Campaign. Create more orchards & growing spaces.
- 🏡 Transform 1 street in the borough into a park (think Alfred Place Gardens, Camden).
- 💚 Deliver safe & lower traffic streets. Reallocate parking for tree planting.
